A man and children kneeled in front of a white sheet with UV lamps in search of insectsThis outing will take us on a night jaunt full of night time insects along Meadow Trail and back. Naturalist Damon Tighe will lead a short introduction to bugs, light trapping, and the iNaturalist app with a short dose of UV fluorescence.

Meet at the White Barn parking lot. Tickets are $10 for general audience, $5 for students, youth (12-17 year-olds), Sugarloaf members, and Sugarloaf volunteers, and free for children under 12. Bring water, layers, comfortable shoes, a flashlight, and if you have them, insect identification guides and cameras. We’ll be using iNaturalist to document our findings. If you haven’t used iNaturalist, or haven’t made an observation for a while, this is your chance – just make sure to load the iNaturalist app on your phone before you arrive and that your device is fully charged. Participants of any level of experience or mobility can help find, photograph, and/or identify life in the park. Join our iNaturalist project here!

This event is part of California Biodiversity Day along with others hosted from September 4-12. California Biodiversity Day takes place on September 7th of each year, marking the anniversary of the launch of the California Biodiversity Initiative in 2018. This annual event celebrates our state’s exceptional biodiversity, while also encouraging actions to protect it.

Ease of access: Meadow Trail is passable by stroller or wheelchair up to the bridge, about a mile in, but is not officially an ADA trail. The White Barn parking lot has an ADA-designated parking space and an ADA-compliant porta-potty.
